Boswellia carterii
The Frankincense tree (Boswellia Carterii), is a small deciduous tree in the Burseraceae family. The Frankincense family comprises 25 genera, that grow in dry mountainous regions of India, Northern Africa and the Middle East.
Frankincense is a white resin exuded from the tree when it bleeds because it has been injured or purposefully cut. Under the fierce sun, the tree oozes resin as a means of repairing itself. Almost like a human scab, it closes up the injury making it impenetrable to pathogens and insects.
This fragrant sticky milky-white resin that flows from the trunk of the tree is dried, and these scabs or tears are collected. The resin is then distilled, producing the precious oil. The resin is known as olibanum, derived from the Arabic al-luban or "that which results from milking", referring to the milky sap. This essential oil has been traded for over 5,000 years.
The oleo gum resins contain 30-60% resin, and 5-10% essential oils, however all species resins create very interesting essential oils.
